Global implications

As head of The Future of Free Speech, Jacob Mchangama recently helped release a new report on the development of public support for free speech across several countries.

While Denmark ranks second among countries with the highest support for free speech, support in the U.S. has declined by 3.1% since 2021.

The report notes that especially younger Americans and college-educated individuals have become less tolerant.

This trend worries Jacob Mchangama.

“My global concern is that the U.S., which has played a norm-setting role and defended strong free speech, is retreating from that role—just as countries like China and Russia are aggressively trying to reshape norms and redefine human rights and freedom of expression to support authoritarian regimes at the expense of individual rights.”
