We are glad to see that Vanderbilt is reevaluating its relationship with the media in light of recent events. We also recognize that Vanderbilt is a private university with more latitude in setting its policies regarding privacy and access to private property.

However, the university’s strong commitment to promoting free speech and open dialogue must include press freedom. This also means acknowledging when it falls short of those principles.

To uphold these ideals, Vanderbilt should formalize a clear and transparent policy that provides the media with general open access to campus and ensures journalists can report on university affairs without undue interference or retaliation.

We plan to offer our guidance and input as the university reviews its media access policies.
